2018 Spiral

Spiral

The Makasi Alley (Turkish word that means “place to store keys”) in the city walls of Heraklion, a reference point for the recent past of the city, is a museum of memory and history. This charged space was chosen to exhibit works of Memory and History that pay homage to its sanctity. They pay tribute to the hundreds of Cretan fighters of the National Resistance who experienced the Nazi atrocities, and also ask various questions.

Installations in the shape of a spiral, an arrow, our DNA, a sistrum etc. made of snail shells threaded through steel wire and twine (5,000 shells).

The shell of the Cretan snail was chosen as the main motif of the artistic constructions, as the empty shell is a symbol of death, while at the same time, its spiral shape symbolizes evolution and immortality.
